What should you wear home from the hospital after giving birth? ›

Going Home Outfit

I keep it really simple. Usually, that's a pair of leggings, one of my favorite tank tops, and depending on the weather, I'll throw on one of my cardigans!

Newborn Swaddles or Gowns

This is preferred because nurses, pediatricians, pediatric specialists and other care providers will be by your room frequently to perform vital sign checks and other newborn procedures. Non complicated outfits are key, and frankly, more comfortable for your baby (who has never worn clothes!).

Picking out the perfect take-home set is important because you want to make sure your newborn is comfortable during their journey from the hospital to your home. Many people like to pick a special outfit for this journey home because it's a big moment for both you, your partner and your baby.

Studies suggest giving birth is the equivalent to running a marathon in terms of energy output, (and can actually result in similar injuries, but let's not go there right now!) so it makes sense to wear a bra and/or clothing fit for exertion and perspiration.

Comfortable Dressing Gown or Robe: A loose-fitting, comfortable gown or robe allows for easy movement and provides coverage while allowing your healthcare provider access for monitoring. Birthing Bra or Tank Top: A supportive bra or tank top can offer comfort and easy access for breastfeeding.

For this reason, pants should be extra-comfy (i.e. stretchy and soft), and ones that provide tummy support are going to be key, especially if you've had a C-section. Undies should be absorbent or offer extra room for pads. And it is great if tops and dresses provide easy access for feedings.

Too many clothes.

You'll likely be in your nightgown for most of your stay, so you won't need a lot of clothes. Pack a going-home outfit that is comfortable and easy to put on, like leggings and a loose shirt.

Usually, you'll only need to bring one outfit for your baby – a coming-home outfit to wear for the trip home. Most hospitals provide a newborn hat, long-sleeved shirts, and swaddling blankets for your baby to wear during your stay. Wear something comfortable to the hospital, such as maternity leggings and a loose top.

Whether you're trying to choose a coming-home outfit for your own little one or pick out something sweet for a loved one's new baby, newborn-size (NB) clothes, or something a bit bigger with some room to grow, such as 0-3 months, is most likely the way to go.

While the size marked on the label make it seem like it's based on baby's age, it's really based on size. For example, “preemie” § usually fits babies up to 17 inches long and five pounds. “Newborn” (NB) represents an average baby at birth up to 21.5 inches long and five to eight pounds.

Some women stay in the hospital gown their entire time at the hospital. That's totally fine. If you would rather slip into some loose clothing of your own — that's cool, too. Think dark-colored yoga pants, nursing or button-down shirts, and other loungey clothing, like a robe, with easy access for breastfeeding.

Even if you're planning a home birth it's good to have one ready just in case you need to go in. You might give birth on your due date but don't bet on this! Packing your bag a few weeks early will mean you have everything you want with you when you go into labour.

Start with a long sleeve cotton bodysuit, then add soft pants, socks, and a sweatshirt or sweater. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), it's often best to dress your infant in one more layer than you're wearing. (And, if your baby gets too warm, simply peel a layer off.)

Maternity dresses: Not only are maternity dresses designed with your bump specifically in mind, but many maternity dresses have nursing-friendly features so you can continue wearing them after giving birth if you're choosing to breastfeed.
