First-time-mom baby registries typically include between 100 and 120 items. This should be more than enough to cover everything you will need for your baby. Because with any type of baby registry, the aim is to only get things for your baby that you will actually need and use.
How many items should I put on my baby registry? There's really no right answer to this one, as what's right for one family isn't right for another. We do think it's helpful to know what other Babylist parents-to-be are up to, though. In 2018, Babylist users had an average of 121 items on their registry.
A Universal Baby Registry is a gift list where you can add items from any store in the world—online or brick-and-mortar (really!). Gifts can be products, experiences, even a Cash Gift Fund for big-ticket items.
You can start early or wait. 20 weeks is a good rule of thumb if you're planning on adding gender-specific things. When should you share a baby registry? If you plan on having a registry, it's good to share your registry a few weeks in advance.
When creating a baby registry, it's essential to balance having enough items for your guests to choose from without overwhelming them. A good rule of thumb is to have various items at different price points, so guests can choose what they feel comfortable buying. Generally, 100 to 120 items is a good range.
That said, it's totally acceptable to put some expensive items on your registry. You can list the things you need, including items like car seats and cribs. Pooling together for group presents is popular, and several friends might pitch in to get a stroller or crib.
For a newborn, it's advisable to register for around 2-3 large packs of newborn size diapers, as babies can go through 8-10 diapers a day in their first weeks.
While it may seem counterintuitive to put size 1, 2, or 3 diapers on your registry, especially since the average baby weighs just 7.5 pounds, your little one will grow… quickly. Sizing up ensures you'll have the right diaper on hand when you and your baby come home from the hospital, and for months afterward.
If you'll only be using bottles occasionally, three or four is probably a good number. Caveat: try before you buy! Some babies are picky and can be really particular when it comes to what bottle they'll drink from—or won't.
Welcome Box: Walmart offers a free welcome box (valued at about $40) that includes baby-related product samples. The samples vary from box to box, but you can expect items like a small bottle of lotion, a pacifier, a sample diaper, coupons and more.
The Babylist Baby Registry app lets you register for all the things you need to bring baby home. Add any baby gift from any store onto one easy-to-use universal registry. Ask for help (like house cleaning), funds (like for diapers) and cash favors, too.
Does it cost to set up a baby registry? Not at all! Whether you're setting up your baby gift list in-store or you're opting to build it online, you won't have to pay a thing to make sure your guests can see and purchase the items you've chosen. Setting up a registry can often reap rewards.
Babylist's universal registry allows you to add items to your registry from virtually anywhere. You can add baby gear from the Babylist Shop, and you can add items from big-box stores like Amazon and Target, as well as small shops (looking at you Etsy).
It doesn't matter if the store provides them or your shower host hand writes them in calligraphy, mentioning a registry in your invitation is like directing guests to buy you a gift—and that is a definite no as far as etiquette goes. “Your registry should just be passed along by word of mouth,” advises Swann.
